Whitefish
is one of the most scenic, breathtaking areas in America. Whitefish is
surrounded on three sides by picturesque mountain peaks that include the
Big Mountain Ski and Summer Resort just outside of town. This alpine
village offers summer activities including the most scenic gondola ride in
the Northwest, hiking, horseback riding, kids day camp, chuckwagon
dinners, village and summit dining, and music festivals in the outdoor
amphitheater. Whitefish still retains the warm, friendly charm of its
bygone railroading days. The refurbished Great Northern Railroad Depot,
along with the western-style covered walkways, are the focal point of the
downtown area. Nestled in the majestic Rocky Mountains on the shore of
Whitefish Lake, this small, friendly Montana town offers the best in
four-season recreation. Whitefish Lake is seven miles long and is
partially within the city limits.
Whitefish's Great Northern Brewing Company boasts its own
microbrewery, complete with public tasting room. It offers Black Star
lager and specialty brews such as Big fog, Black Lager, and Huckleberry
Wheat Lager.
Housed in the historic Great Northern Railroad Depot, the Stumptown
Museum includes many railroad artifacts as well as community memorabilia
and photographs. the Depot was restored by the Historical Society in 1990
to its original 1927 Glacier National Park chalet-like appearance. Great
Northern Locomotive #181, one of only seven of its kind ever built, can be
seen at the museum.
Enjoy Montana's only 36-hole golf course, Whitefish Lake Golf Course,
with spectacular views of both mountains and lakes. The clubhouse offers a
restaurant serving lunch and dinner.
Whitefish
Lake City Beach offers a sandy swimming beach and beautifully landscaped
public park on the shores of pristine Whitefish Lake. The sandy beach
provides picnic tables and barbecues under roofed pavilions, as well as
sunbathing, docks, and a public boat launch. Food concessions and water
craft rentals are available.
A superb cross-country skiing facility right in town, the Glacier
Nordic Center features 15 kilometers of impeccably machine-groomed trails
for both skating and classic techniques. The trails wind over rolling
hills, along lakes, and through birch forests. Four kilometers are lighted
for night skiing.
